Solo UX/ UI Project
Abstract
The objective of this project is to improve the mobile user experience of the game Genshin Impact by redesigning its interfaces. Despite its compelling plot, characters, and environments, the identical PC and mobile interfaces have been a source of frustration for new mobile users. Due to the differences in screen dimensions and controllers, mobile users have found it difficult to effectively navigate the game. The project includes extensive research and analysis of the game to determine the specific requirements of mobile users and replace the existing interfaces with mobile-specific designs. The primary objective is to redesign five crucial game interfaces to enhance the mobile user experience. This initiative aims to increase user satisfaction and make it easier for mobile users to appreciate the game.
Introduction - Genshin impact
"Genshin Impact" is an MMORPG open-world game developed by miHoYo in 2020. It takes place in the fantasy world of Teyvat, with seven nations, each tied to an element and ruled by a god. The story follows the Traveler, who searches for their lost sibling with their companion Paimon and becomes involved in Teyvat's affairs. The player controls one of four interchangeable characters in a party and can switch characters to use different skills and attacks. Characters' strengths can be improved by leveling up, enhancing artifacts and weapons, and attempting various challenges to increase Adventure Rank, unlock new quests and challenges, and raise the World Level.
introduction - MMORPG
A role-playing game (RPG) is a video game genre in which users take fictional roles through structured decision-making. MMORPGs are a form of RPG combining elements of role-playing video games and massively multiplayer online games. Unlike single or small multiplayer RPGs, massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) allow multiple players to interact in a persistent game world that continues to exist and evolve even when the player is inactive. Character development is crucial, with players earning experience points to gain levels and become more powerful. In "Genshin Impact," achieving the maximum level shifts the emphasis to accumulating money and equipment for aesthetic value, including endgame equipment that provides a competitive advantage during boss encounters and player vs player combat.
problem
Numerous Genshin Impact mobile users have reported that the interface and navigation system are not user-friendly. The fact that the game has the same interface for PC and mobile platforms is one of the major issues. However, the PC and mobile platforms differ significantly in terms of screen size and control alternatives. The reliance of mobile users on touchscreens can make it difficult to traverse the game's interface. In addition, MMORPGs, such as "Genshin Impact," may be less mobile-friendly due to their high entry barrier and open-world environments, which are better tailored for PC players with a larger monitor and keyboard.
Nevertheless, mobile users favor games with shorter, casual play sessions. The majority of mobile games consequently have simple rules, brief sessions, and low entry barriers. These issues have made it difficult for mobile users to truly appreciate "Genshin Impact" and demonstrate the need for a mobile-specific user interface design.
pain points
MMORPGs have a high entry barrier for mobile users.
The lack of a main lobby is confusing for mobile users.
Mobile users face challenges in accessing statistics, inventory, and shop information, as it requires navigating through several interfaces.
goals
In order to improve the user experience of "Genshin Impact" on mobile devices, I'm redesigning the game's interface to be more intuitive. I'm converting the game from the MMORPG genre to the Casual RPG genre to attract more new mobile users. The project involves evaluating the gameplay, determining which features to retain and which to eliminate, and designing the user interface for its main lobby, inventory, statistics, map, and shop. The objective is to simplify the user interface to make it more accessible and pleasant for casual players while retaining the game's core features.

conclusion
Throughout this project, I've acquired valuable insight into the crucial relationship between user experience and game interface design. The "Genshin Impact" case study demonstrates the significance of adapting interface design to the specific requirements and constraints of various platforms and user groups. By transforming the game from an MMORPG to a Casual RPG, simplifying the user interface, and optimizing it for mobile users, I intended to make the gameplay more accessible and pleasurable for casual players. Through research, user interview, and high-fidelity prototypes, I've created a new interface that meets the requirements of mobile users and improves their gaming experience. I hope this project inspires further improvements in game interface design and helps to bridge the gap between different platforms and user groups.
